California is several climates rather than one, so the grooming advice changes with where you are: coastal fog keeps coats damp, the Central Valley and the deserts dry them out and make hair brittle, and the mountains bring a real winter coat cycle.
The thing that applies almost everywhere in the state is foxtails. From late spring, dried grass seeds work into feet, ears, armpits and the folds behind the elbow, and they only travel in one direction. Keeping the hair between the pads and around the ears short through the dry months is the practical defense, and checking a dog over after a walk through dry grass is worth the two minutes.
