Colorado is dry, and dry air is hard on coats in ways that do not show up until you work them. Static, brittle ends and flaky skin are all normal here, and a coat that has not been conditioned will break rather than release when it is brushed out. It is one of the few places where a leave-in conditioner earns its place in a routine.
The mountains add the other job. Dogs that hike come back with burrs, grass seeds and mud in the feathering, and a coat kept a little shorter through the summer is a great deal less work than one kept long and combed out every evening.
