Iowa gives coats a proper seasonal rhythm, with heavy shedding in spring and again as the weather cools. Dogs that spend time on farms or in field edges pick up the other local problem, which is seed heads and burrs worked into feathering and between the toes.
Both are easier to manage on a slightly shorter coat through the summer. That is not the same as shaving a double coat, which should not be done: taking length off the feathering and keeping the feet tidy is what stops burrs turning into mats.
