Idaho is dry through the summer, and dry country means seed heads. Cheatgrass and foxtail work into feet, ears and armpits from early summer onward, and they travel inward rather than falling out. Hair kept short between the pads through those months prevents most of it.
Winter is the opposite job. Double coats come into their own and should be left alone rather than clipped, and the work is getting the dead undercoat out so the live coat can do what it is for. A coat that is packed with shed hair insulates worse, not better.
